Frequently Asked Questions

Our patients have lots of questions to ask about Botox treatments. Therefore, we’ve put together a list of these questions for you to read and digest before making your initial free appointment.

Botox, or botulinum toxin has been used in several medical procedures. In cosmetic applications, Botox is a series of injections which relax facial muscles and make lines less visible. The procedure uses very fine needles to help eliminate lines such as wrinkles, crows feet and frown lines. Botox is thus a non-surgical treatment which is very quick and straightforward. Furthermore, Botox helps to prevent the future development of wrinkles and fine lines.

Botox should always be performed by a Doctor or Dentist with the correct professional qualifications.  Consequently, here at Shields in Limerick, we only use qualified and experienced practitioners who provide a safe and suitable environment. Botox is injected with small needles and used in small volumes, so there is no risk of any side-effects. In any case, you will be given a thorough assessment prior to your treatment. However, the treatment is not advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Your Doctor or Dentist here at Shields in Limerick will want to assess your medical history at your first consultation. They will also need to understand the reasons why you are seeking treatment. The injections will be given around the areas that you are looking to treat.

Botox is usually injected in the following locations:

  • forehead,
  • between the eyebrows,
  • the corners of the eyes,
  • between the nose and mouth and
  • into the crease running from the corners of the mouth down the side of the chin.

The effects of the treatment will not appear straight away. In most cases, patients will see results within three to five days after treatment. An obvious reduction in the wrinkles and lines on the areas of your face that have been treated will become apparent. Full results are often visible two weeks after the treatment.

The results of the injections will be visible for between four and six months after treatment.

The following factors affect how long Botox will last:

  1. The location of the injection
  2. The amount of Botox injected
  3. Your age and the elasticity of your skin – elasticity decreases with age and the effects may wear off more quickly
  4. Wrinkle depth – The effects may wear off more quickly when treating deep wrinkles

You will be invited to attend a free pre-treatment consultation in order to asses your suitability for Botox. If you are suitable, we can of course go ahead with your treatment. Whilst the majority of patients are suitable, injections are not advised for pregnant or breastfeeding women as the side effects on the baby are at present, not known.

Patients can experience some discomfort, though most will tolerate this well. If you have any worries, our practitioners here in Limerick will do everything they can to make you feel at ease.

The injections take only several minutes to administer.

The main side-effect is mild redness, swelling or bruising and this should resolve quickly. The reaction is similar to getting an injection from the doctor. Also, you may feel like you’re wearing a tight baseball cap on your forehead after a couple of hours. This can last for a couple of days and is normal.

Botox is a medically-tested and approved substance, manufactured in Westport, Co. Mayo by Allergan, a world-renowned Pharmaceutical manufacturing company.  Here are 5 common misconceptions that people can have about Botox and the truth behind each one:

  • Botox is Toxic – To be clear, Botox is incredibly safe and is not toxic to the body whatsoever.
  • Botox makes you look Frozen – A patient’s face can go numb or look ‘frozen’ (expressionless) if they receive a dose that is too strong for them. However, this will not occur if you use trained, experienced practitioners (like ours at Shields) to administer the treatment.
  • Botox is Painful – If you don’t like needles, don’t worry! The needles are miniature so pain from the injection is minimal. Also, the Botox itself, once injected by a trained, experienced practitioner doesn’t cause any pain.
  • Botox is invasive – It’s a short, simple procedure that involves injections into the area you’d like to treat. The body’s functions aren’t disturbed and there’s no need to enter the cavities of the body.
  • Botox is Permanent – The thing about Botox is that you have to get regular treatments if you want to maintain the results. It’s not a permanent solution to ageing.
