Teeth Whitening.

A bright smile

can be the first thing people notice,

so don’t disappoint.

A smile can make such a difference to you and everybody that sees it, and teeth whitening can give you the confidence to use it – knowing there are no stains.

Teeth Whitening is a popular, safe and effective procedure where the shade of your teeth can be altered without removing any of the surface of the tooth.

Teeth can become yellow for many reasons but it is most often related to diet and lifestyle. You can read more about these factors here.

white, bright smile.

Firstly, teeth whitening treatment involves the use of hydrogen peroxide gels in ‘trays’. These trays fit into the mouth like gum-shields. They are applied at home for several hours a day over a number of weeks, until the desired effect is attained.

Teeth whitening is often performed alongside composite bonding, whereby a dentist can achieve the same effect by adding layers of white filling material to the front surfaces of the teeth.

How long does the procedure take?

Best results are achieved by the slow release of hydrogen peroxide within the tray system. Applied daily over a period of weeks, this accordingly achieves significant and sustainable teeth whitening.

How long-lasting are the results?

Teeth whitening results vary depending on the original shade of the teeth. Moreover, whitening lasts for around one to three years, although sometimes it can last for longer. The teeth then tend to darken slightly over time.

Does whitening work for any teeth?

Teeth whitening only lightens the existing tooth colour. Actually, veneering is the option if you desire a change to a specific shade. Whitening is for natural teeth only. Unfortunately, it will not work on dentures, crowns or veneers. Also, removable dentures that are stained or discoloured can be cleaned by the dentist, but, like veneers and crowns, might need replacing. Your dentist will advise, based on your individual needs.

Can root-treated teeth be whitened?

If the tooth has been root treated, then ‘Yes’ they can be whitened. This is achieved by re-opening the canal which previously contained the nerve, to allow the application of the whitening solution.

How do I care for my teeth after whitening?

Good oral hygiene, with regular visits to the dental hygienist are the best way to maximise the longevity of whitening or any dental treatment. Your dentist can advise on products available for maintaining the effect of the teeth whitening treatment, based on an assessment of your lifestyle. Some people find that teeth can be sensitive for a few days after treatment, but the sensitivity wears off after a short while. Your dentist can therefore advise on products available to counteract this.

What about top-ups?

Top ups can be applied when necessary. Give us a call at 061 480 070 or complete the form below to make an appointment. You can also book online here.

Is the treatment painful?

During treatment, a mild sensitivity can be experienced, which can be effectively treated with fluoride rinses.

Are over-the-counter teeth whitening kits safe?

Over the counter teeth whitening kits are also popular, but they are not advised for the following reasons:

  1. They are unregulated and untested. Thus the safety of the procedure is questionable.
  2. Hydrogen peroxide levels are generally low, giving less than satisfactory results.
  3. The potential for side-effects such as sensitivity is more likely.
