What is a dental implant?

Before we delve into why dental implants are so great, let’s talk a little bit about what they are and how they work.

Dental implants are made from titanium, a material that’s extremely compatible with the human body – a patient rarely rejects a dental implant. As they’re permanent fixture that’s surgically placed into the jaw, they offer an unmatched level of support for an artificial tooth. The idea of dental implants is for them to become an artificial replacement for a natural tooth root. Subsequently, the jawbone grows around the implant and remains healthy and robust.

A set of bespoke dentures, crowns or a bridge are fixed securely over the top of dental implants via a connecting element called an abutment, allowing you to eat, talk, kiss and smile without the worry of the restoration sliding out of place.

Why dental implants are the no.1 choice for replacing missing teeth

Dental implants are absolutely the best means of replacing a lost tooth. If you’re based in Roscrea or Limerick, and you’d like a fixed and long-lasting restorative treatment, choose dental implants.

No barriers with your diet

restorations like traditional dentures and crowns can make eating certain foods a challenge – steak, bread, sticky confectionary, pork chops, and ribs are all culprits. Dental implants make it possible for you to enjoy these foods again, without the worry that your dentures or crowns will become damaged, as they’re securely fastened in place.

Preserve a youthful appearance

lost teeth are associated with growing older, but tooth loss has another ageing effect. Losing teeth affects the face’s supporting structures, causing a hollow look to the cheeks and mouth. Dental implants solve this issue by providing the support the jawbone needs to uphold the aesthetic of the bottom half of the face.

Love to smile again

tooth loss, particularly that affecting the ‘social six’ (those most visible when your smile), can leave you with confidence and self-esteem issues that stop you smiling altogether. The bespoke restorations placed over the top of dental implants provide outstanding cosmetic results for your smile. Here at Shields Dental & Orthodontic Clinic, we always plan the creation of your restoration with a high level of precision so that it looks at home in the context of your whole smile.

Why replace conventional dentures with implants?

Here at Shields Dental & Orthodontic Clinic, we’ve treated many patients in the Roscrea and Limerick areas, replacing their conventional dentures with All-on-4 dental implants. This treatment allows patients to walk out of the clinic in a single day with a brand new set of teeth. It secures your teeth in place, so you no longer need to worry about slipping dentures, and even patients with very little jawbone are eligible.

Using as few as four implants makes it possible to stabilise a whole arch of teeth in place. This is much more cost-effective than using individual implants, and we recommend this treatment for edentulous patients and patients who have a high number of missing teeth.

The implants used as part of the All-on-4 system are strategically placed at very precise angles to offer optimum support for the arch and an excellent level of stabilisation for your new false teeth. The fact that they are placed this way also means the treatment is more streamlined and less invasive than if individual implants were used.

A significant benefit of replacing regular dentures with All-on-4 ‘teeth in a day’ is that the jawbone receives the support it needs to stop from shrinking away. Having these four implants preserves the jawbone and decreases wrinkles around the mouth associated with missing teeth. Treatment also helps to give a fuller appearance to the cheek area, which will no longer appear droopy and sunken because of lack of jawbone stimulation. This can make a huge difference, particularly to edentulous patients who have been living without teeth for some years. There is a 25% decrease in the width of bone during the first year after tooth loss and an overall 4 millimetres decrease in height over the next few years.
