How can orthodontic treatment help me?

Orthodontic treatment can correct swallowing and breathing problems. When you have misaligned teeth, it can cause sleep apnea as well as inconsistent breathing during sleep.

Cross bite – This is when one more more of your upper teeth bite inside your lower teeth. Orthodontic treatment can be used to address this.

Crowding – A patient suffering from crowding has extra or badly positioned teeth.

Overbite – Lower front teeth biting into the upper tissue of your upper teeth.

Excessive spacing between teeth – When teeth are too small or too large or if there is spacing between teeth, this can lead to tooth decay.

Changes to facial structure – When you have misaligned teeth, you facial structure can be affected. Addressing this through orthodontic treatment will rejuvenate your facial structure.

Chewing problems – Many people with misaligned teeth find it difficult to break down harder foods – orthodontic treatment can gradually rectify this.

Here at Shields we offer several orthodontic options for misaligned teeth which include Invisalign, traditional metal braces and ceramic braces as well as options for dealing with bite and jaw complications. Shields can prescribe an Occlusal Splint which is designed to guide your teeth into a desired position.

Orthodontic treatment is also a popular option alongside cosmetic treatment and often encompassed as part of a smile makeover. Another benefit of correctly aligned teeth is that they are easier to maintain and therefore you are at less at risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease or more complex problems. When you have problems with crowding or spacing as well as poor alignment, the gaps in your teeth becoming a breeding ground for bacteria which can then evolve to become periodontitis. The longer this is left untreated, the more at risk you are from developing such problems. You may also develop chronic headaches and migraines – many patients feedback that these gradually cease after undergoing treatment.
