Discreet and natural looking.
An attractive option.

Ceramic braces are a discreet style of fixed metal braces that use tooth coloured ceramic blocks on the front of the teeth instead of stainless steel, and white wires and clear ligatures, which are used to attach the wire to the blocks. Patients feel less self-conscious as they’re less noticeable.

They provide all the versatility and reliability of fixed braces but are less obvious, thereby helping adult patients feel comfortable enough wearing them to begin what can be a life changing course of treatment. Ceramic braces are also available for children and teens at Shields Dental & Orthodontic Clinics.

How they
work.

Ceramic braces are a fixed brace type repositioning the teeth very precisely. They are permanently fixed during the treatment period unlike removable brace types such as Invisalign. So you don’t have to keep track of the time you’re wearing them.

Your Shields orthodontic dentist will carefully consider and evaluate the way the teeth overlap when closed before deciding to proceed with ceramic braces. The ligatures, the elastic bands that hold the archwire (which is tightened every six weeks) are either white or clear. These are changed every time the braces are adjusted.

What type of orthodontic problems do ceramic braces correct?

Ceramic braces have the same characteristics as traditional metal braces and therefore correct the same issues. These issues include;

  • overcrowded teeth which have unnatural gaps between them – this is observed when the upper front teeth are biting too far forward over the lower front teeth
  • overbites and underbites – when the lower teeth protrude over the upper front teeth
  • open bites – when the front teeth cannot occlude (bite) together, despite the back teeth touching
  • cross bites – this is when several of the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth.

What are the advantages of ceramic braces over metal braces?

Ceramic braces have the following advantages over metal braces:

  • They are popular with adults due to their more aesthetically pleasing appearance
  • Ceramic braces tend to cause less irritation to your gums than traditional metal braces
  • They are more comfortable to wear than metal braces

What is the step-by-step process for ceramic braces?
  • At the initial consultation, we discuss the treatment process with you and decide if ceramic braces are the correct treatment for your condition.
  • Your orthodontic dentist will take impressions of your teeth once a bespoke treatment plan has been drawn up. The braces will of course be an exact fit for your teeth.
  • Once the impressions have been taken, your brace will be made up and fitted. Your teeth will be deep cleaned before fitting to remove any plaque and tartar staining.
  • The brackets will be glued to your teeth and firmly bonded in the correct position.
  • The archwires and elastics will be adjusted. They can then begin the process of moving your teeth into the correct position.
  • You will need to visit us regularly during treatment to have your progress checked and the brace adjusted.
Why are ceramic braces attractive for patients?
  • The braces are discreet to others because the brackets bonded to the front of the teeth are tooth-coloured. The ligatures (elastic bands holding the archwire in place) are white or clear which also adds to the subtle appearance
  • Ceramic braces can help boost your confidence and renew your desire to smile, even during treatment
  • Post-treatment, enjoy the foods you love with a set of healthy, aligned teeth!
Am I eligible for ceramic braces?

You will need to attend a consultation so that our orthodontic dentist can asses your eligibility for ceramic braces. Our orthodontic dentist will carefully consider and analyse the way the patient’s teeth overlap when their bite is closed before proceeding with treatment for ceramic braces.

What happens during treatment?

You will need to attend an initial consultation where you can discuss your treatment plan with our orthodontic dentist. We understand that every patient is different and has different needs – we will try and accommodate you whenever we can. Your ligatures will be tightened every 6 weeks and will be changed each time the braces are adjusted.

How do ceramic braces work?

Ceramic braces function in the same way as traditional metal braces. Treatment time can be longer as the braces are more fragile, though the success rate is extremely high and worth the wait. Ceramic braces also cause less irritation to your gums than traditional metal braces do. Comfort is at the forefront of ceramic braces’ design and this is amalgamated with a high quality of functionality.

What care is required after braces come off?

Things you can do at home to care for your teeth after braces include:

  • Schedule a professional exam and cleaning

After having braces, you are well aware of how challenging it can be to keep your teeth clean. Now that they are off, it’s a good idea to schedule an exam and thorough, professional cleaning. While at the dentist’s office, consider a whitening treatment, too. This can help get rid of any stains or yellowing that may be present.

  • Wear your retainer

Your teeth are naturally inclined to move back to their original position. In fact, the biggest risk of this happening is within the first few weeks after you have gotten your braces off. The retainer is going to keep your teeth where they are supposed to be.

  • Adopt a thorough oral health care routine at home

Braces are a big investment. Now that they are off, it’s important to follow a good daily dental regiment. This can help you keep the beautiful and healthy smile you worked so hard to get. Some of the things you need to do each day include:

  1. Brush your teeth: You should plan to brush your teeth at least two times a day using a soft bristled brush. Also, replace your toothbrush every three or four months.
  2. Floss once a day: By flossing one time a day, you can remove food particles and plaque that your toothbrush can’t reach. Be sure you are flossing each space in between your teeth.
  3. Use mouthwash: This is optional, however, if your teeth need a bit more protection than just brushing and flossing, speak to your dentist about the right mouthwash options for your needs. This also gives you nice, fresh breath.
  4. Clean your retainers: This needs to be a part of your daily routine. After it becomes a habit, it won’t feel so much like a chore.
  5. Keep your beautiful smile after braces: By using the tips and information here to care for your teeth after braces, you can feel confident the beautiful smile you worked so hard to get won’t be lost.
