7 Top Invisalign Myths Debunked

Oct 14, 2022 | Orthodontics

Invisalign is the most sought-after orthodontic treatment at Shields Dental – and we’re not surprised. For the last decade, this technology has circulated on the internet and media for its magical ability to straighten smiles. It’s already improved the appearance of over 13 million smiles worldwide and will continue to do so.

But, as with anything that gets a lot of public attention, myths will be spread about it. This can be off-putting for many of our patients. And we understand why; Invisalign is a considerable investment in your dental health.

We’ve fixed many smiles with Invisalign over the years. As such, there’s not much that we don’t know about this treatment. That’s why we’ve debunked the top 7 Invisalign myths, so you’re well-informed when beginning your teeth straightening journey.

What is Invisalign?

Before we unpack the myths, let us explain what Invisalign actually is. Invisalign is a teeth straightening solution which uses clear aligners to gently move your teeth. Every two weeks, you’ll receive a fresh set of aligners from us until your teeth reach the desired final position.

These aligners are removable, making them easy to look after. They’re also pretty much invisible, making them a great choice for those who aren’t keen on metal brackets and wires.

Invisalign aligners offer plenty of benefits when assisting your teeth straightening process. Click here to read more.

The Top Invisalign Myths Debunked:

Invisalign is one of the top-rated dental treatments on the market. Yet still, there are many myths and misconceptions attached to these aligners, which include:

Myth #1: All Aligners Are The Same

There are many clear aligners on the market that all claim to give the same results. This can make it hard to know which ones to choose.

You may think that all clear aligners are the same, but this could not be further from the truth. Invisalign aligners are made from patented SmartTrack material, which means they are truly unique. This SmartTrack material keeps the aligners firmer for longer, which enhances results. It also can reduce the treatment time.

Invisalign aligners also fit better than the rest. Sometimes, the other aligners on the market may look more invisible than Invisalign. This usually means they are made of thinner materials that can break and hinder the straightening process.

Remember: you’re wearing them for most of the day, so you want them to rest comfortably in your mouth.

The Invisalign service is also unparalleled to other alternatives out there. The 3D ClinCheck software allows both you and the dentist to witness the different tooth movement stages on the screen. This is great because we often get questions like ‘how effective will it be in straightening my teeth?’ And with this software, there’s no guessing about how your teeth will look after the
treatment.

Myth #2: Invisalign Can Stain and Become Visible

In theory, yes. Invisalign can stain. I’m sure you’re now thinking: doesn’t that go against one of the main benefits of these aligners? Yes, it does. But, Invisalign aligners will only stain if you do not care for them. That’s why it is important to follow the correct aftercare advice.

Removing your aligners when eating and drinking, followed by deep cleaning, is essential. By sticking with the steps, your aligners will stay fresh and look as invisible as when they first arrived at your door.

Top tip: always brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners. You should also clean the aligners daily with Invisalign cleaning crystals.

Myth #3: Only Simple Malocclusions Can Be Corrected

Most people are aware of the power of Invisalign to straighten slightly crooked teeth or close the gaps between teeth. But it can actually do much more. Invisalign can also fix various malocclusions, which include:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbites
  • Open bites

Myth #4: Invisalign Does Not Take as Long as Traditional Braces

Both orthodontic treatments have variable time lengths, which depend on the extent of the dental issues they’re trying to fix. The more crooked the teeth, the longer Invisalign will need to correct them. So, it isn’t a miracle quick fix for everyone.

There isn’t much of a time difference between these two procedures regarding complex dental issues. For instance, Invisalign can take from 3-18 months to reach desired results. Whereas fixed braces require 20-24 months. Therefore, which option you choose depends on personal preference regarding aesthetics and budget.

The extent of the dental concern you’re trying to fix will also influence this choice. As mentioned above, there are some malocclusions that Invisalign cannot fix. After examination, our dentists will guide you to the right treatment choice.

Myth #5: Invisalign Aligners Are More Expensive Than Traditional Braces

Many people also assume that Invisalign aligners are the more expensive option. In reality, there isn’t that much price difference between the two.

At Shields, the price of Invisalign aligners ranges from €1695-€4500. In comparison, the price of traditional fixed braces (upper and lower arch) costs from €4200. So, depending on what you’re trying to fix. Invisalign can actually be the cheaper option.

Myth #6: You Can Remove Invisalign as You Please

To reach the best results, it’s necessary to wear your aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day. This leaves two hours for eating and drinking. This means although they are removable aligners, they still must stay in most of the time. This is why we advise Invisalign, which is durable and comfortable to wear all day long.

Myth #7: Any Dentist Can Deliver Invisalign

It’s true that any dentist can deliver Invisalign. But first, general dentists and orthodontists must take a two-day certification course.

For orthodontists, this course is mostly to access the Invisalign ClinCheck software. While for general dentists, this may be their first experience with tooth movements and braces. That’s why we suggest doing thorough research before rushing into the procedure.

Here at Shields, Dr Robert Hardy provides all aspects of general dentistry. He is also our Platinum-level Invisalign Dentist, among Ireland’s top Invisalign providers. Particularly experienced in Orthodontics, Robert has been changing smiles with Invisalign for years, delivering the very best results.
